1. In our class room children are organized in multi-age groupings which allows individualized rates and learning interactions between younger and older children.
2. Children choose their own work and they are allowed to work independently at their own pace. As children progress and complete a self-correction exercise, they develop confidence in their ability to understand. Freedom of choice, independence, self-correction and confidence lead to self-discipline.
3. The Montessori class room is a prepared environment where teacher is facilitator---guiding a child in learning of new skills and concepts. She shows the use of objects and presents Montessori exercises to children. The prepared environment of our class room contains:
Practical Life Skills
The material necessary to carry out the Exercises of Practical Life. The practical life exercises (washing, sweeping, pouring, polishing, sponging, dusting etc) are beginning activities which help the child develop coordination, a sense of order, concentration and good working habits.
Sensorial Activities
The sensorial apparatus is used for development and refinement of visual, olfactory, tactile, auditory and stereo Gnostic senses. The sensorial exercises not only help a child in discrimination of the concepts of color, size, dimension, form, sound, taste etc; they also detect defects in any sense organ at an early age. Sensorial teaching materials are self-correcting materials and are designed to be aesthetically pleasing and fun to work with.
Mathematical Development
Basic concepts of Math are given through concrete and self-correcting materials. Introduction of quantity and symbols from 1-10 are given, and then progressively, numbers 1-1000 are introduced. Later, basic operations are presented. Over 62 concrete materials are direct and indirect preparation of Math.
SOCIAL GAMES, FINGER PLAY, GROSS MOTOR MOVEMENT AND OTHER GYM ACTIVITIES are an integral part of our Montessori environment.
